It was a beautiful sunny day in Portland, Oregon
- and a group from Imago Dei Community came together with a yard
full of clothes, furniture, and other assorted
treasures with the hopes of raising money for Sudanese Widows.
The Home Community
group had recently met and discussed how they could have a practical
and loving impact on the community around them. One of the evenings
they watched Hotel Rwanda; on another evening they listened to
a talk about the Sudanese Widows Project.
This Widows
Project initiative was set up by Susan Tabia of the International
Widows Association for Southern Sudanese Refugees in Uganda (IWASSRU).
IWASSRU has been active for over a decade in Northern Uganda and
Southern Sudan providing care and support for hundreds of widows
and orphans who have been devastated by the civil war there.
The team in
Portland set aside a Saturday to collect used items from dozens
of households for an event deemed "The Biggest Freakin' Yard
Sale". The sale lasted from 8 AM to 4 PM.
The money will
then be sent to Uganda and Sudan where Susan Tabia and the team
there will purchase food, clothing, blankets, and other essentials
for the vulnerable widows of the region.
